At its recent board meeting, Ron Hammer was named director of Darien EMS-Post 53.

As director, Hammer is responsible for the operations of the ambulance service, including personnel, training, fundraising, operations and community outreach.

Hammer, the seventh person to serve as director in Post's 40-year history, takes over for Dennis Cummings, who resigned due to job commitments.

"We thank Dennis for his service and contributions during his tenure," said Mike Murray, the Post's board chairman. "Dennis will still be an adult advisor in the Post, taking duties when he is available. Ron Hammer is an active Post 53 adult advisor and also a volunteer with Stamford EMS. We are fortunate to have Ron as director given his invaluable experience and commitment to the organization. Ron, along with Deputy Directors Gayle Close and Margo Benton, ensure the legacy of dedicated leadership of the Post"

Hammer and his wife have lived in Darien for nearly 20 years. After his retirement from a career in investment banking, he followed in his son's footsteps by volunteering for Post 53. He has been an active A-EMT and adult advisor of the Post for the past two years. His son, a 2009 Darien High School graduate, is a graduate reserve and A-EMT at Post 53. His daughter is a seventh-grader at Middlesex Middle School. In addition to his volunteer roles in EMS, Hammer is co-chairman of A Better Chance in Darien and serves as a member of the allocations committee for The Community Fund of Darien.

Darien EMS-Post 53, staffed by Darien High School students and adult volunteers, provides emergency medical services to the Darien community. The volunteers of Post 53 man three fully-equipped state-of-the-art ambulances, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The organization has been recognized for its excellence on the national level.
